Dealing with data

Read the article Dealing with data published on the LNG Industry January 2016 issue, introducing a new software that can extract knowledge from telemetry data, named KETTY, Knowledge ExtracTion from Telemetry Data.

The software is tailored for telemetry data acquired from satellite but it is easily applicable to a wide set of different application domains that have available a large amount of data.

KETTY may be useful to help engineers or field experts in the automatic:

  • Extraction of synthetic characteristics of the monitored data (system characterization to identify the most significant and reliable quantities to be used for novelty detection and to synthetize their expected behaviour);
  • Evaluation of the system behaviour, by the identification of subsystems or components with novel behaviour, ordered by priority score (novelty detection by comparison of a reference dataset with a comparison dataset);
  • Determination of cause-effect relationships between parameters of the system that may not be known a priori (behaviour interpretation providing greater insight of the process being monitored).

For a vast range of scientific and industrial sectors, including the hydrocarbons production chain sector, there is a need for the acquisition of a great quantity of data for the monitoring of the systems and processes involved. The identification of a new or anomalous observation and of its possible causes through mere visualization of the acquired data is extremely difficult. To remedy this, there is a great need for a diagnostics system that is able to elaborate acquired data and automatically identify “normal” observations and any possible “new” phenomenon and identify possible unknown relationships among subsystems or processes.

The automatic system diagnosis may be performed using a variety of methods…
